I acknowledge the Wodi Wodi people of the Five Islands Dreaming as the traditional custodians of the land on which I work and live. I pay my respects to all First Nations people, their connection to Country and the cultural knowledge they hold.

  ARTIST STATEMENT

Janine Bailey is an artist who cultivates slower relationships with the materiality of printmaking, sculpture and drawing. Her approach amplifies processes such as folding, pulling, tracing and stretching and is exemplified by her use of felting – a textile producing practice in which natural fibres are condensed and pressed together. In this interchange between materials and artist there is both comfort and agitation as possibilities for expression and healing emerge. Materials such as wool, stone and charcoal assume an empathetic quality, which is enhanced when Bailey’s sculptural and graphic works are considered alongside her felted birds and other animals. Bailey extends her interest in questions of communication, multispecies and sustainability in work that combines nature materials, participatory sculpture and performance.

Janine is currently undertaking research into sustainability and the visual arts at University of Wollongong. Her PhD candidature is interdisciplinary, working with the discipline of Geography and Sustainable Communities and the school of Arts, English and Media.
